Exit 49, 400 feet above sea level, on top of what geologists call the Ronkonkoma moraine, the backbone of the island, and the base for the Long Island Expressway.

12am, 5GMT: I don't need GPS to know where I am on the LIE: I know every bump and pothole that preceds each exit. I know for instance that the lampost on exit 62 will blind you when you drive on the right lane, and you have to wait until the exit-sign covers it to be able to read which exit you just missed. If your gas light comes on before exit 52 don't follow the "gas station" sign on this or the next two exits because the stations are closed, and the nearest petrol station is four exits away. If you know how far you can go on the "empty" light, chance it. If you don't, turn back or brave it and see how far you get.
